 Urban Decay is seeking a Design Director to join our team in Newport Beach, CA.

POSITION PURPOSE

 

The Design Director serves as a leader within the graphic design department.  This role reports directly to the VP of Creative Design. The Art Director will mentor the Web and Creative Services design teams. This role will serve as a tastemaker within the department, keeping current on design trends. They will assist the VP in expressing and evolving the brand and will help ensure that the rest of the design team produces highly creative, on-brand work. With the most developed fine art skills in the department, the Art Director will not only utilize their superior graphic design skills, but will also be the one called upon to provide/give direction on sketches, renderings, creation of unique type and patterns each season.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 
  • Work with the VP of Creative Design / AVP of Creative Design to create seasonal global design concepts for use each season, including type treatments, patterns, illustrated elements, etc. Develop seasonal graphic standards and advise design team on proper usage
  • Work with the VP to evolve Urban Decay brand standards as needed and enforce throughout the organization. Drive and maintain brand consistency
  • Provide constructive feedback and approvals on designers’ projects as proxy for VP / AVP
  • Requires a strong proficiency in file preparation and delivery for multiple mediums. Although press checks will not typically be attended by the Art Director, a developed understanding of printing, digital/offset, specialty treatments and materials is required in order to design with the most creative possibilities in mind
  • Mentor and coach design team members to provide daily guidance on design, time management, and personal conduct. Conduct annual reviews for design team members
  • Work with Creative Operations Manager to suggest ways to run the department more efficiently. Request equipment upgrades for the team as needed
  • Work with VP of Creative Design to keep the design team happy, inspired, and up-to-date on technical knowledge and design trends. The VP of Creative Design and Design Director work together to create the graphic look of the season
  • Sample of the design projects the Art Director might work on:
    • Assist in concepts and layouts for ad campaigns and photo shoots
    • Concept look and feel for event materials: invites, visuals, wardrobe, etc.
    • Skin 2D renderings: product components and packages, event materials, merchandising
    • Create a brand pattern for use across all mediums

 SPECIFIC JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

 
  • This position requires someone with more of a fine art background who can handle the truly creative aspects of projects, rather than just layout. Illustration, type design (hand/digital), and strong concepting skills necessary. Excellent sense of typography and color.
  • Passion for design in daily life. Watches trends, reads relevant blogs and design sites, well informed of new features in Adobe CS, etc.
  • Possesses a design aesthetic focused around feminine, high-fashion, edgy, luxury, metropolitan trends (as opposed to a mass, teen, action sports, or cutesy design aesthetic.)
  • Experience designing in a commercial capacity. The Art Director should be able to walk the line between art and commerce: Design creative pieces that reinforce the brand image while also communicating clearly and driving sales
  • Superior layout skills
  • Print production experience is extremely helpful, including press checks, knowledge of specialty treatments, and mediums
  • Experience managing junior design team members preferred.
  • Apparel production experience a plus
  • Experience designing for a variety of mediums (print, web, apparel) a plus
  • Communicate well with creative team members at all levels, from the Chief Creative Officer to a production designer. Collaborates well with copywriters, production team, etc.
  • Attention to detail. Submits work that is free of errors. Delivers flawless final files. Good archiving habits
  • Must be able to manage time and multi-task

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education/ Experience/ Licenses or Certifications:

 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, with an emphasis in Fine Art
  • 10+ years’ experience
    

SOFTWARE

 
  • Mastery of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Proficient in InDesign
  • Mac system/software
  • Basic MS Office Software
  • Basic PC/Mac conversion/compatibility troubleshooting
  • Resourceful with internet
