Machine Operators are responsible for the operation of packaging lines.  This includes start-up and shut down, monitoring, identification of line issues, troubleshooting and making minor adjustments and repairs.  A Machine Operator must have working knowledge of the production process, items produced, and equipment utilized in maintaining production within specific norms and standards.  At all times, Machine Operators must maintain a safe work environment, follow all safety procedures, and complete all physical demands listed in the “Physical Demands” section using safe ergonomic techniques.  A Machine Operator must ensure that all production meets our quality standards and is completed in a safe manner aligned with our Quality and Safety Policies. Machine Operators are line owners and must make independent decisions on line operation daily, knowing when to involve others.  They are responsible for executing TPM methodologies on their lines and must be willing to use hand tools to address maintenance needs.  Machine operators must be willing to support the mechanic assigned to their lines with changeovers and other minor machine repairs. Machine operators must follow all inventory control procedures and ensure accurate inventory levels are maintained.

 

Job Requirements

  • Prior experience working in a manufacturing/packaging environment;
  • High School Diploma, technical education / certificates preferred;
  • Technical aptitude to diagnose operation of equipment;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Computer knowledge to operate manufacturing systems;
  • Manual dexterity and control of movement to work with tools;
  • Have the visual/auditory acuity required to read invoice I.D. #s on product labels, and hear warning alarm;
  • Read and comprehend written instructions and reports;
  • Complete written and computer-generated reports;
  • Work flexible hours/shifts, including overtime;
  • Able to use tools in the proper manner

Judgment & Decision Making

  • Decision made by the Machine operator can directly impact Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, Environment and Morale. They must make these decisions with only intermittent involvement from Supervision based on the knowledge gained from their trainings.
  • Safety: Must make independent decisions aligned with our safety rules to ensure their safety and the safety of their coworkers.
  • Quality: Decisions made on the lines ensure that our customers receive quality products.
  • Delivery:  The ability of the operator to meet the production demands ensures that our customers receive our products on time.
  • Cost: Operation of the line according to the line standards ensure that cost to produce are aligned with the financials
  • Environment; the operator is respectful of our environment and must make decisions daily regarding line waste and water usage.
  • Morale:  Must come in daily with a positive attitude and a focus on teamwork to achieve world class results.

Essential Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged Standing
  • Continuous Movement in and around packaging line
  • Frequent Bending and Stooping
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Pushing and pulling up to 25 lbs

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure high standard of quality control and follow all quality and GMP procedures;   Visually inspect product for quality assurance, verify product labels and I.D. numbers correspond to products being produced, and perform quality assurance tests (such as weight and torque);
  • Work independently, make decisions, and use adequate organizational and time management skills; Maintain open communication (verbal and written) with supervisors, mechanics, other employees, and complete paper and computer work (refer to specific department duties); Document Work Order information (batch numbers, etc.) requiring direct contact with processors
  • Conduct tooling changes on machinery and make minor adjustments to machinery; Work to ensure production equipment is ready for use;
  • Perform normal/routine equipment maintenance and conduct/document productive/preventative maintenance procedures; Perform preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned;
  • Plan in advance for a “change over” and coordinate services with the mechanics to adjust, clean, or replace equipment efficiently to minimize the downtime on the production line;
  • Track labor and equipment downtime in labor system;
  • Clean equipment and perform other custodial responsibilities
  • Assist Line Mechanics with equipment trouble shooting, major equipment repairs, equipment installations and test runs;
  • Participate in TPM methodologies from inception to completion.
  • Assist in training of assigned personnel in technical and operating procedures Train temporary staff in the areas of Safety and Quality.  Provide work instruction for temporaries.
  • Maintain adequate component supply levels using inventory control procedures and best practices
