Position Summary

The AVP of Sales is responsible for planning and managing the complex aspects of the Essie Professional Sales function in a multi-channel, and local salon-based environment.  The functions include:  Direct Sales, Sales Operations, Trade Marketing, and Sales Administration.  The channels of distribution include:  Salon Centric (servicing full service salons); Nail Distributors (servicing nail bars); US Broker Teams working on behalf of the brand and Other (Distributors servicing Beauty and Barber Supply Stores who sell to local OTC stores), across the US geography.


Success will be driven by utilizing accepted business practices in strategic planning, business plan development, account management, staffing, negotiation, communication and leadership.  This position’s focus is on accelerated growth – over achievement of net sales volume and profit goals, brand share in professional nail market, brand penetration of nail bars and salons, and development of teams to aggressively execute for results.


The AVP of Sales has P&L responsibility with the SVP and holds his direct reports accountable for the financial integrity of their budgets assigned to drive sales.  She/he has a good understanding of the classes of trade and the required mechanism to effectively capitalize on opportunities for profitable sales growth.


Position based in NYO, it will require to travel up to 60% of the time to the different US regions to manage the business with local distributors and broker teams.





Essential Duties and Responsibilities














  • Partner with the SVP in developing and implementing strategic direction for the Essie Sales Team. In particular, driving the strategic development and plan for penetration growth within nail bars and full service salons; outlining strategy for brand conversion/ownership where distributed.
  • Ensures the strategic direction is aligned with overall corporate objectives and guides the team in the tactical planning of distributor, chain, and local salon specific programs that will deliver on key Marketing and Sales objectives.
  • Leads the team in the analysis of overall business conditions to anticipate and forecast volume trends, changes and threats affecting Essie PPD’s position.
  • Guides the team to ensure successful account management and development of strong customer relationships at all levels to enhance our standing with the trade.
  • Directs the team to ensure a strong and continuous analysis, understanding and communication of account/salon penetration as well as competitive activity related to the business (i.e. competitive promotions/launches, etc..)
  • Responsible for ensuring all spending is within budget and in accordance with spending policies:  staffing, T&E, trade fuel spending, special project labor, special promotional programs, and markdown programs.
  • Assess areas of improvement for the sales team; a desire and willingness to coach, motivate, and mentor others is needed in order to rally the team, drive revenue, and take Essie PPD to the next level of success (3x the size in 3 years).
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with Marketing and Finance teams as well as other key PPD senior management contacts.




The AVP of Sales leads the Nail Distribution Team, Essie Salon Centric Team, and Essie Chains/Direct Team.  This business-minded individual takes personal responsibility for achieving results without compromising standards, and at the same time includes other key functions in the decision-making process in a collaborative way.  She/he has strong cross functional and team building skills with an ability to manage effectively up, down, and across the organization.  She/he has strong influencing ability and compelling communication skills.  His/her excellent partnering and team skills will facilitate success, internally and with external partners and cross functional partners.  She/he is a strong leader and coach with proven track record of success in sales and in developing new business and in developing talent/teams.





ü  Bachelors Degree required.

ü  Requires 8+ years of progressive growth Professional-related product sales organization with demonstrated sales results, with at least 4 years within Nail Professional expertise.

ü  Requires high degree of successful management ability in key areas:  sales, accounts, team selling, operations, budgets.

ü  Exceptional track record of account relationship management.

ü  Aggressive results orientation – ability to use innovative means to achieve results is a must:  building new business with distributors; conversion of salons to Essie salons; building capabilities/providing direction to salon centric sales consultants.

ü  In depth understanding of the supply chain and decision making processes to successfully partner work with cross functional teams.

ü  Excellent problem solving and conflict management skills.

ü  Must possess and exhibit a leadership ability; to serve as a role model in personnel management and development; to be accountable for all decisions and activities in the areas assigned; and be committed to the goals and values of the sales organization.

ü  Must have demonstrated analytical approach to account and business management, excellent communication skills, and interpersonal skills required in successfully representing the company in the marketplace.

ü  Must have the ability to successfully manage budgeting and financial functions and to attend to administrative and reporting requirements.

  • Passion for the beauty industry, specifically nail category.
  • Knowledge of and experience in selling to beauty distributors, specifically nail.
  • Ability to personal sell (1:1 in salon environment); quickly assess situations; articulate customer needs; attention to services and generating ideas for incremental salon business with nail opportunity.
