Associate Scientist – Expert/Sensory

Department:  Product Performance Evaluation (Expert/Sensory)

Location: Clark, NJ

The position is in the Product Performance Evaluation Department at the L'Oreal USA R&D facility in Clark, NJ. This position is a hybrid role which is responsible for performing high quality, accurate expert technical assessments of formula performance criteria according to defined test protocols, gestures and rating scales across all L’Oreal products with an emphasis on Cleansing/Beauty Devices and skincare products. In addition, this position will be handling data analysis, data synthesis and report writing of sensory studies. 

Job Specifications:

  • Responsible for high quality, accurate assessment of formula performance criteria according to standard protocols in the following categories;
    • Cleansing/Beauty Devices
    • Skincare formulas (i.e. serums, moisturizers, masks, cleansers, makeup removers)
  • Qualifies volunteers for participation in studies based on specific study criteria
  • Develops strong intra and inter-departmental cross-functional relationships and foster integration of knowledge across métiers pertaining to Expert and Sensory Evaluation
  • Designs and executes sensory panel studies and training exercises
  • Monitors sensory panelist performance and identifies area for training as needed
  • Analyzes sensory data and writes reports to clearly communicate findings to the formulation chemists

 

      Department Support

  • May require domestic and/or international travel for special operations or presentations
  • General housekeeping of Evaluation Center and work space
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Licensed cosmetologist with recent/current salon, spa or makeup counter experience
  • B.S. in Food Science, Sensory Science, Psychology or related field; M.S. is a plus  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Interest in personal care industry and associated skincare/makeup/hair products/services
  • Excellent team player
  • Ability to multi-task, good organization skills, and flexibility is a must
  • Knowledge of:
    • Experimental design and basic statistical methods including statistical packages such as XLSTAT, SPSS, or SAS
    • Questionnaire programs such as SIMS, FIZZ, Compusense, or RedJade  
  • Creativity in developing new testing methods
  • Interest in human behavior/perception and the sensory properties of products
  • Working level of computer literacy and Proficient in Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the US on an on-going basis.
