Senior Scientist – Instrumental Evaluation (Skin)

L’Oreal – Clark, NJ

The Instrumental Evaluation department is a specialized team focused on objective, scientific testing of innovative products in development by L’Oreal laboratories.  Testing methods are developed, validated, and adjusted as needed to keep up with the exploration of novel properties of new formulas.  This team also executes research and develops knowledge of hair and skin properties, including its response to environment and treatment, across various ethnicities.  In addition, the team builds for the future of evaluation through the development of sensors and mobile device-based tools for contextual real-life evaluation and real-time consumer engagement. 

This position will work on innovation instrumental testing and method development specifically for skin care products.

 

Job responsibilities

  • Designs, proposes, and leads the instrumental test plans for innovation projects and task forces related to skincare and skincare cosmetics
  • Organizes, plans, and effectively executes instrumental testing to support aid to formulation and innovation studies for skin care products
  • Analyzes instrumental test data and write reports and memos to clearly communicate findings and share information with colleagues
  • Collaborates with labs, international colleagues, and evaluation team to determine study design
  • Works on development of new methods and improvement of existing methods, and evaluates new equipment for use in innovation and aid-to-formulation testing
  • Drives projects from inception to completion with quality, timeliness, and professionalism
  • Evaluates and summarizes published literature (internal and external) on various topics surrounding skin, skin testing, and skin treatment devices;
  • Prioritizes project workload with supervisor, performs project tracking, and scheduling
  • Maintains instrumentation and laboratory equipment and ensures proper operation/ maintenance documentation

Requirements

  • Bachelors with 2-5 years of relevant working experience OR Masters with 1-2 years OR PhD with 0-1 years of relevant working experience; preferred areas of study include Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Material Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Bioinformatics or related fields
  • Experience with experimental lab work and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting required
  • Experience in processing data and statistical analysis required
  • Programming skills is highly desirable, especially experience with computational software, such as R Studio, Matlab, C++, or Java;
  • Experience in image processing (ImageJ, ImagePro) is highly desirable;
  • Experience materials testing, optics/color science, and/or clinical photography are highly desirable;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and technical communication (written/oral) required
  • Must be able to work on several complex projects at the same time with flexibility and organization;
  • Capable of working in a matrix organization, including strong teamwork skills
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the US on an on-going basis.
