Position Title:  Director, Microbiology

Reports to:  Vice President, Safety, Regulatory, Claims & Microbiology Americas

Department/Location:  Microbiology, Clark, NJ

 

Major Function:

  • R&I Microbiology department provides support during development of all microbiologically susceptible formulations, to assure microbiological integrity and safety of L’Oréal products. This includes recommending product preservation systems, conducting experiments supporting skin microbiome studies, microbiological quality of the raw materials and filled units, investigating, and proposing new/innovative testing methods, and overseeing a safe and orderly laboratory environment.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Be the strategic and operational leader of a team of highly skilled technical professionals within the global Microbiology organization supporting the Americas while continually encouraging 100% employee engagement.
  • Provide direction and set objectives for the team within the Microbiology function of SRCM Americas with regard to cosmetics, OTC monograph products, drugs, medical and beauty devices, and chemicals throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Participate with opportunity to lead in cross-disciplinary projects initiated within the worldwide Microbiology network.
  • Be an integral member of a diverse global team of scientists focusing on a variety of microbiological topics including support of green science and microbiome-related research.
  • Be a technical resource to Operations by aiding in manufacturing microbiological risk assessments.
  • To assist in working towards the harmonization of testing protocols and determinations of the necessary microbiological evaluations needed for raw materials and finished products.
  • Provide the expertise required to defend Group's microbiology policies, practices, and projects before the relevant stakeholders.
  • Interact directly with senior management on microbiology-related issues in terms of company positions and testing protocols.
  • Assisting with implementation of continual improvement of laboratory operation including writing/revising SOPs, and Work Practices.
  • Lead and direct in laboratory external proficiency and internal quality control schemes.
  • Represent L’Oréal in trade associations and other external liaison scientific task forces and monitor key microbiology-related issues related to company interest and make recommendations to management regarding possible courses of action.
  • Responsible for goal setting and talent development of team for continual growth of functional expertise and skills.

 

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Microbiology or related discipline, with 10+ years of progressive laboratory experience required
  • 5+ years of people management experience required
  • Experience with consumer products and preservation science/systems strongly preferred
  • Skilled professional who can independently apply, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts within the field of microbiological sciences including the microbiome and green science-related areas.
  • Relevant microbiology laboratory expertise in the cosmetic, OTC, consumer health care, medical device and/or pharmaceutical industries, with global vision of the profession.
  • Expert knowledge in preservation effectiveness in research, pilot, and production samples.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, managing and developing high performing cross-functional and multi-cultural teams.
  • Knowledge of cGMPs and related compliance regulations required.
  • Expert knowledge of compendia and other relevant methods/standards/guidelines including USP, PCPC, ISO.
  • Participation in various technical & liaison organizations within the industry.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, problem solving skills, and the ability to deal with complexity.
  • Ability to analyze and summarize complex technical issues and initiatives for key business target audiences.
  • Proven leadership skills with a strong results orientation, positive "hands on" attitude and a sense of urgency to get things done with demonstrated grace and even temperament
  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis, without the need for sponsorship now or in the future required
