Inside L’Oréal’s Research & Innovation Division, Development is responsible for working closely with our over 35 brands to adapt and innovate formulations into new and exciting products based on consumer and marketing insights. Development of great products requires building strong, international collaborations across different functions to ensure that products are seen from inception to officialization for our local and global launch deadlines.


We are currently seeking a talented and innovative Senior Chemist to join our Development department located at our Clark, New Jersey facility for Research and Innovation. In this role you are responsible for technical aspects of specific product development categories. You'll maintain awareness of scientific literature, patents, raw material technology, processing methodology, and marketing/consumer trends required to perform innovative product development assignments in an efficient manner. You'll regularly engage with key stakeholders to define evolving priorities and working methods. You'll also be overseeing a safe and orderly laboratory environment.


  • As an experienced researcher; independently manage multiple projects from inception to officialization to meet launch deadlines under minimal supervision.
  • Investigate and resolve research problems and issues as they arise
  • Execute potentially more complex projects and/or handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Independently creates and refine product formulas
  • Monitor the stability, quality and conformity of formulas
  • Identifies raw materials and technologies suitable for product development
  • Potentially mentor technical staff on project basis, acting as resource in lab for advice and support
  • Demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness in proactively identifying and proposing solutions to issues that may arise during product development or in transfer to manufacturing
  • Be responsible for product formulation from conception to launch as well as supporting and collaborating with other teams as necessary throughout the process
  • Have a clear and shareable version of the objective, goal, and consumer insight for each project
  • Keep up to date with competitor landscape and project benchmarks
  • Interface with technical support groups including marketing, analytical, scale-up/pilot plants, and manufacturing
  • Potentially manage some external vendor relationships when applicable to projects assigned
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or related science is required. Masters' preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in personal care product formulation/emulsion science is required. Experience in makeup/skincare preferred
  • Experience in OTC/SPF/sun-protection desirable
  • Strong communication, presentation and project management skills.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to share and teach in the area of expertise with experts and non-experts alike
  • An established self-awareness, in terms of understanding your own culture, identity, biases, prejudices, power privilege, and stereotypes
